June 12: A Day to Remember, A History to Relive
The Philippine Independence is one of the most crucial parts of the
country’s history. It is the day the country reigned its independence from the
Spanish Rule. And the day that changed the country’s history and the people’s
future. With the importance that it brings to the Philippines, it is now the
most significant event in the country’s history and is remembered on this day.
On June 12, 1898, Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence for the
Philippines while raising the Philippine Flag and singing the Philippine
National Anthem for the first time. After years of being colonized and reigned
over by the Spanish, the Philippines formed its biggest revolution to fight for
its independence. Originally, the Philippine Independence Day was held on July
4 however, in 1962, it was declared as the country's day of freedom through a
presidential proclamation issued by President Diosdado Macapagal. According to
the former president, a nation’s independence should not be accorded to by
another country. Due to this change, June 12 is now the known Independence Day
of the Philippines.
The Philippines has a very broad history. Dating back to the 16th
century up until the 20th century, a lot has happened to the country,
from different colonisations to wars. But amidst all of this, the Filipinos’
great sense of nationality led them to fight for their country’s freedom. The
different sacrifices, and challenges, to the loss of many lives, has brought
the country independence. And it is now remembered and honored on June 12 as a
National Holiday.
