The Binatbatan this Twenty-Twenty One
One of the biggest and most prominent festival of Vigan city is the
Binatbatan Festival. The Binatbatan Festival; celebrated yearly and held during
the last week of April until the first week of May, is a festival that
celebrates the art of weaving and its importance in the Ilocano culture.
Various events are held such as street dancing contests, Kalesa parades,
traditional games, etc. in line with the celebration of the festival.
Through the past years, the Binatbatan Festival has always been a
consistent celebration wherein various events are held that attract many
tourists and locals. The occasion honors the culture and brings great
liveliness not just in the city but also throughout the whole province.
However, last year the unchanging festival was hindered due to the rapidly
growing pandemic. Events were cancelled, and the celebration was watered down
due to risks of the virus spreading among locals. This year celebrates the 2nd
year of the Binatbatan Festival amidst the pandemic. Various measures were held
in order to pull through the festival. And events such as the Binatbatan street
dance was held online through the use of different streaming platforms such as
Facebook and Youtube. Other events were cancelled and public gathering was
strictly minimal in order to avoid the widespread of covid. Ilocanos showcased
their creativity and resourcefulness through filming the street dance
performances.
Due to Covid-19, locals and tourists cannot fully enjoy and feel the
liveliness and spirit of the Binatbatan Festival, however, it is still celebrated
in a different way and the sentiment behind it is still remembered. And through
the use of online platforms, the Binatbatan Festival was commemorated.
