Lenten Season during the Pandemic
Lenten season in the Philippines is usually held strictly. As a predominantly Christian country, the Lenten Season is a big part of the country’s culture. Events are thoroughly followed, and many devoted Christians meticulously follow all the traditions. From attending ash Wednesdays, to waving the palaspas in church, these events are always done annually. However, this year’s Lenten season is different from the past years. Unlike the past years, masses are held online. Due to the pandemic, the gathering of numerous people is risky. With the dangers of further spreading the virus, most traditions are to be done at home, or only with the participation of a few people. Showing on different streaming platforms, devoted Christians have no choice but to join the mass online. Various churches have moved their ceremonies online, streaming on facebook live and such. In other places however, a few events are still held physically but with only a limited number of attendees. Despite these differences and difficulties, the Lenten Season passed on smoothly.
The Lenten Season is a very important event in the Philippines. This season has a great significance for devoted Christians. With traditions that are thoroughly done each year, last year, and this year’s Lenten season is significantly different. With mass celebrations held online, this is certainly a big change from the usual tradition. Though streamed masses aren’t new, as it has been done on live television before, it is surely new that it is suddenly everyone’s only resort in attending the mass. Despite the pandemic fully hindering Filipinos in observing the Lenten Season, it does not change the people’s faith in God.
