Ilocos Sur’s Kannawidan Festival

        

        The Kannawidan Festival is one of the most prominent and important festivals here in Ilocos Sur. The Festival Celebrates the culture of Ilocos and it showcases the different arts such as music, dance and others. This festival is also a time to commemorate the anniversary of Ilocos Sur since it was separated on February 3, 1818 as a province. More than hundreds of Ilocanos, tourists, and guests participate in the festive celebration of the Kannawidan. It also includes various events, competitions and parades. This Festival holds great significance to the province and its people. But what exactly makes it so important?
        Celebrating its 29th anniversary since it was first established in 1992, the Kannawidan Festival is still up and going. Despite the pandemic that has reduced all sorts of social gatherings and interactions, the Ilocos government has decided to continue the celebration of the Festival. The Kannawidan Festival holds a very big significance for Ilocos Sur. It plays a big role on the province’s economy and culture. The festival is crucial for preserving and appreciating the different cultures of not just the province but for other parts of the country as well. Through different events such as the street dance competition, talented dancers are able to join and showcase their abilities, they are also able to present the different choreographies and moves significant to their own culture. Choirs competitions are a big opportunity for choir groups and aspiring singers, and they are able to show the beautiful songs of their culture. And various merchants from different parts of the country are able to showcase and sell their products. 
        There are many other reasons as to why the Kannawidan Festival is so important in Ilocos. It is an important time to celebrate and appreciate the cultural heritage of the province. From locals to visitors, everyone joins the festivity of the Festival. It holds great significance to the province’s economic, social, and cultural status. And most importantly everyone is united in order to celebrate the culture and identity of Ilocos Sur and the Ilocanos.
