Festivals During the Pandemic
The
month of January is one of the most important months for Vigan City as it
celebrates the Kannawidan Festival. The Kannawidan is one of the biggest
Fiestas celebrated not just in the city, but in the whole province. Trade fairs,
Street Dance Competitions, Choir Contests, and other events are part of the big
celebration. During the Festival a lot of people usually join and participate,
whether they are contestants in certain competitions, vendors in the trade fair,
tourists, or even locals. But this year, because of the Coronavirus, it is
seemingly impossible for such celebrations to happen. So how will the annual
Kannawidan Festival take place this year?
Although we are in the middle of a
pandemic, the celebration of the Kannawidan Festival is still taking place from
January 29 until February 5. The celebration lasting only a week instead of the
usual one month. In line with everyone’s safety, the Provincial Government has
released a series of health protocols that should be followed during the
festival. Face masks and face shields should always be worn. Physical
Distancing is also mandated and anyone under 15 years old and senior citizens
are not allowed to enter the trade fair. Competitions such as the Saniata ti
Ilocos Sur was held as a lockdown competition where viewers were able to watch
it online. Though the Pandemic is the biggest challenge, hindering us from
fully enjoying the festival just like we did years ago, we are still able to
celebrate it because of the great cooperation of everyone following the health
protocols.
Despite Covid-19 preventing us from
having a normal celebration of the Festival, we can still enjoy the festival in
a different way. Instead of the usual month-long celebration the Kannawidan, it
will only be held for a week. A set of Health Protocols is also strictly implemented
especially in places such as the Trade fair. Following these health protocols, the
Kannawidan Festival can be celebrated without risking a possible widespread of
the virus in the province.
